What is classed as notifiable electrical work?

In the UK, notifiable electrical work refers to certain types of electrical work in a home, garden, greenhouse, conservatory, or outbuilding that must legally be notified to, and inspected by, the local authorities to ensure that they comply with Part P of the building regulations.

These include the following:

  1. New or replacement consumer units (fuseboxes).
  2. Any new circuit installation, for example, to power an electric shower, a cooker, or a new extension to the house.
  3. Replacing a circuit’s protective device with a type of device which provides different characteristics, such as an RCD (residual current device).
  4. Any alteration or addition to existing circuits in a special location, such as rooms containing a bath or shower, swimming or paddling pools, or a sauna heater.

The purpose of notifying such work is to ensure it's safe and meets the necessary regulations. Normally, notifications are done by a qualified electrician who can self-certify their work.
